Response paper is a critical evaluation or, more specifically, an intellectual response to a piece of writing, movie or work of art.

Response papers are particularly difficult to write because students are unsure about the exact proportion between ‘personal’ and ‘critical’ inputs. The basic rule about writing response essays is to balance these approaches according to their relevance. Response to an article, focusing on source facts and conclusions, is far more critical than responses to movies and books which are more subjective and personal.

Response Essay on Literature– Introduction

The introduction of a response essay starts from a clear topic sentence which announces what will be the subject of the following critique. The author and title of the book in question should be named. It’s very important to give some details about its content such themes, genre, as well as social or historical background. Next, thesis of the paper ought to clarify which aspect of the novel will be considered and briefly explain why. Literature Response Paper Argumentation

Argumentation which is presented in a response paper to a literary work should be organized in accordance with paragraphs. Narration paragraphs can be used in order to reflect on the plot of the novel; classification paragraphs can be useful for writing character synopsis, and description paragraphs can help to reflect on the intricacies of any subject of your interest.

  • Situate the subject as well as style of the novel in the literary and personal biography of its author. Relate the novel to the broader historical context from which it’s derived in order to reflect on its relevance within the so-called literary culture.
  • Evaluate character development and style – identify literary devices used in the novel, psychological processes, and relate them to the conceptual aspect of the novel.
  • Agree and disagree by always providing explanations, arguments and examples. Even though response essays are based on opinion-making all arguments should be elaborate and somehow justified.

Writing conclusion to a response essay on a literary work requires coherence. It should contain a short summary as well as restatement of all personal impressions you wrote about previously. You should, then, proceed to general statements on the subject of your analysis and conclude by saying in what way the author of the novel managed to contribute to the subject he or she presents.
